This summer, Universal Pictures releases the sequel to Mamma Mia!, the 2008 box office hit based on the songs of Abba.
The first film (which continues to play as a stage musical in London’s West End since 1999) tells the story of Sophie – a 20 year old girl who has been brought up by her mother on a Greek Island. With her wedding to lover Sky fast approaching, she trawls through her mothers diaries to find out who her father is, in the hope she can invite him to the wedding and walk her down the isle. Sophie gets more than she bargains for when she discovers that there are three potential fathers and when they all arrive the day before the wedding she has to try to work out which one is her real father.
The new film (which includes a selection of Abba’s hits and lesser known songs) takes a look at the back story of how Donna, met Sophie’s three potential fathers when she was young (as Sophie is now expecting a child of her own). The young version of Donna will be played by Lily James and Meryl Streep reprises the role of the modern day mother.
Also reprising their roles from the first film are Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård. Perhaps most excitingly of all is that singer/actress Cher will join the cast of this film to play the role of Donna’s mother, Ruby.
Mamma Mia – Here We Go Again is due to be released in Cinemas on 20 July 2018.
