The Book Of Mormon has reopened in London after nearly eighteen months of closure due to the pandemic. But a lot has changed in the world during that time and I wonder if it is still seen as acceptable to have on stage. In a world where people are being called out for using inappropriate language, is making light of raping babies, African people’s names, and different cultures
Written by the creators of Southpark and Avenue Q, the Book Of Mormon is a musical comedy telling the story of two young Mormons who are sent on their mission to Africa, to convert the people to mormonism. Whilst not their first choice of places to be posted and (in Elder Prices case) not their first choice of mission companions, they make the most of it and give it their best shot. But it is not an easy task.
Personally, as much as I love the Book Of Mormon, I think producers should have considered the world has moved on in the past couple of years and humor like this is no longer funny to many people.
