Drag Divas is a fabulously camp drag show, playing at the Arts Theatre. With tributes to Shirley Bassey, Tina Tunrner, Aretha Franklin, Cher, Liza Minnelli, Amy Winehouse and more.
Tribute is probably the wrong word for them to be using. A tribute act is someone who looks (or at least sounds) like the person they are impersonating, and they work hard to incorporate the singers traits into the performance. None of the above is done in this show. It is a celebration of gay icons music and is great fun, but it is nothing more.
The show is a late starter, 10:15pm which means you really have no choice but to go out drinking before hand. This works perfectly so that when the show starts you’re happily sozzled and looking for a party. Drag Divas certainly is a party!
A west end show this isn’t, it is nothing more than a drag show and is not a piece of theatre. That’s not a bad thing, just confusing as to why it is on in a theatre and not a pub. I guess if they can have the burlesque Hurly Burly Show in a theatre then there is no reason why they can’t have a drag act! However is this the direction we want to see the West End moving into?
