Actors who have played Elphaba in the London production of Wicked the Musical

The London production of Wicked the Musical opened in 2006 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre.
The show will celebrate twenty years in the West End in 2026 and with the release of the hit movies Wicked (Parts 1+2), it looks like this show will be around for a long time still.
I thought it would be fun to take a look at all of the actors who have played the iconic role of Elphaba in the London production, so far.
Idina Menzel, Kerry Ellis, Alexia Khadime

Idina Menzel (September 2006-December 2006)
Idina Menzel originated the role of Elphaba in the World Premiere production of Wicked on Broadway in 2006 (following pre-broadway try out in San francisco May 28 to June 29, 2003).
She starred alongside Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and the pair are still seen as the iconic duo, from throughout the shows worldwide history.
Idina transferred with the show to open the London production in 2007. Kristin Chenoweth didn’t not perform in the London production – the original Glinda in the West End was Helen Dallimore.
Kerry Ellis (January 2007 – May 2009)
Kerry was the original British Elphaba, joining the cast from the very beginning as the standby for Idina Menzel who transferred with the show from Broadway to London. Idina was only scheduled to open the show for the first three months and it was understood that Kerry would take over the role permanently, when she did.
In 2008, Kerry became the first British actor to play the role of Elphaba in the Broadway production. Whilst she did this between June-November 2008, Standby Alexia Khadime took over the role in London until Kerry returned in December 2008.
Kerry officially left the London production in May 2009, with Alexia taking over the role full time.
Kerry returned to the London production briefly from August – October 2014, whilst Willemijn Verkaik was recovering from an injury.
Alexia Khadime (May 2009 – March 2010)
Alexia Khadime was the first Black British actress to play the role of Elphaba.
She joined the cast in 2008 to play the role whilst Kerry Ellis went to join the Broadway company of the show for six months. Alexia returned to the role in May 2009 and played Elphaba until March 2010.
Alexia returned to the London production of Wicked in March 2023, taking over the role from Lucie Jones. She played the role until March 2025.
Rachel Tucker, Louise Dearman, Willemijn Verkaik

Rachel Tucker (March 2010 – October 2012)
Rachel Tucker took over the role of Elphaba from Alexia Khadime in March 2010 alongside Louise Dearman as the new Glinda. After two and a half years, Rachel left the show to have a baby.
In September 2015, after performing in the short lived, Sting Musical ‘The Last Ship’ on Broadway, Rachel joined the Broadway company of Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre for nine months, until July 2016.
Rachel returned to London and to the UK production of Wicked for its 10th anniversary celebration and once again played the role of Elphaba from September 2016 – January 2017.
Louise Dearman (October 2012 – November 2013)
Louise Dearman first joined the cast of Wicked in March 2010, playing Glinda alongside Rachel Tucker as Elphaba.
In October 2012, she became the first actress in history to play both leading roles, rejoining the London cast as Elphaba.
Willemijn Verkaik
Willemijn Verkaik made her Wicked debut, opening the Stuttgart, Germany production of Wicked in October 2007 where she stayed for two years before leaving to open the touring production in Oberhausen, Germany in March 2010. Willemijn stayed with the tour until February 2011.
Later that year in November 2011, she joined the Dutch production of Wicked in Scheveningen and stayed with the show until it closed in January 2013.
Willemijn soon jumped over the pond to join the Broadway company of Wicked in February 2013 for a short stint three-month-stint until May 2013.
She went on to join the London production of Wicked, replacing Louise Dearman as Elphaba in November 2013. Willemijn stayed with the London company until July 2014, when she had to leave three months earlier than planned due to an injury.
Willemijn returned to the London production in January 2017 and stayed for six months, leaving in the July.
