Investec Opera Holland Park is excited to be bringing – for the first time to a professional London stage – Jonathan Dove’s Flight. Delightfully melodic and inventive music paired with a hilarious libretto by April de Angelis, Flight is refreshing opera experience for all ages.
The story centres on a common occurrence, shared by many of us – flight cancellations, but with the addition of slapstick comedy, camp canoodling and a poignant story of a stranded refugee. It is not hard to understand why Flight has become one of the most popular and performed British operas in recent decades.
Flight will be helmed by the wonderfully inventive Stephen Barlow as director – whose productions of Puccini’s Tosca, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Puccini’s La fancuilla del West and Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci previously at Opera Holland Park have won him high acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Conducting will be Brad Cohen, know as a leading interpreter of the bel canto repertoire. The stage will be filled with emergent British talent including some of Britain’s leading young artists, including Kitty Whately in the role of stewardess and Ellie Laugharne singing Tina. We’re also excited to have returning to OHP heavy weights such as Nicholas Garrett singing the Minskman and George von Bergen in the role of the steward.
Flight promises to be an evening of hilarious theatre and magical opera, which will leave both the hardened operaphile and the fresh faced newcomer fully satisfied.
