The National Theatre has announced its 2027 programme, with eight world premieres, a run of classic revivals, and Paul Mescal returning to full repertory theatre in two roles at once.
The season plays out across all three of the National’s stages (the Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman) throughout 2027, with further shows touring the UK and streaming via National Theatre at Home. Full casting, dates and booking details are live now on the National Theatre’s website.
WORLD PREMIERES
New writing takes centre stage next year. James Graham reunites with director Jeremy Herrin for Major, a new play tracing John Major’s rise to Prime Minister, while Indhu Rubasingham directs The Great Indaba, dramatising the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
Natasha Gordon adapts Bernardine Evaristo’s novel Mr Loverman for the stage, and three-time Emmy winner Uzo Aduba makes her National Theatre debut in The Adeyemis – A Family Saga. There’s also a brand new British musical, Glorious Madness, built around songs by Joan Armatrading and directed by Phyllida Lloyd.
The biggest event of the year might well be Ghostlight – a new immersive production from Punchdrunk, marking 50 years since the National’s South Bank building first opened.
CLASSICS REIMAGINED
Rep returns to the Lyttelton, with Paul Mescal starring as Biff Loman in Death of a Salesman and as Michael Carney in A Whistle in the Dark, playing in tandem.
Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell reunite to co-direct a major revival of West Side Story in the Olivier, and Emilia Clarke makes her National Theatre debut in David Hare’s Plenty, directed by Richard Eyre.
Emma Corrin and Harriet Walter lead Michael Grandage’s production of Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly Last Summer, and Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead gets a fresh staging 60 years on from its original run.
BEYOND THE SOUTH BANK
It’s not all happening in London. Ballet Shoes heads out on a major UK tour with Anton Du Beke, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice tours to seven regional theatres, and family show The Last Wild plays venues across the country. Inter Alia transfers to Broadway with Rosamund Pike reprising her role, and National Theatre at Home is offering new subscribers a free seven-day trial as over 25 new titles join the streaming platform.
