Max Stafford-Clark’s acclaimed revival of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Olivier Award-winning play will tour to Croydon, Colchester and Bristol before playing an extended run at the Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis. Later in the year it will play further UK dates and a run in Toronto.
Based on Thomas Keneally’s novel The Playmaker, Our Country’s Good is the true story of a ragbag cast of convicts, who put on a play under the guidance of an earnest young marine officer, Ralph Clark. As the barriers between captors and captives break down, they start to discover each other, both onstage and behind the scenes.
25 years ago, Our Country’s Good premiered at the Royal Court Theatre before transferring to the West End and Broadway, winning major awards on both sides of the Atlantic. This new production – by the same director, Max Stafford-Clark – toured to great acclaim before transferring to the West End’s St James Theatre in 2013.
Our Country’s Good is designed by Tim Shortall (Out of Joint’s Top Girls; La Cage Aux Folles and Sweet Charity in the West End); with lighting by Johanna Town and Sound by Andy Smith. The cast includes Tom Andrews, Victoria Gee, Sam Graham, Cornelius McCarthy, Richard Neale, David Newman, Kathryn O’Reilly, Anna Tierney and Jessica Tomchak.
