Kerry Ellis and Louise Dearman have known each other for twenty years but have never performed alongside each other. Until now. Joining forces for a special one night concert at the Prince Edward Theatre, the two ladies treated their fans to just about everything they could have asked for. Musical theatre songs, pop songs, solos from their albums, just about all bases were covered. Peppered with some great comedy and a real demonstration of the bond they share, this truly was a great evening.
Kerry Ellis is no stranger to the West End having performed in My Fair Lady, We Will Rock You, Wicked, Cats and Les Mis to name but a few. Louise has been in Grease, Guys and Dolls, Evita and is the only woman to ever play both lead roles (Elphaba and Glinda) in Wicked. Between them they have pretty much done it all.
Classic songs by Celine Dion, Tina Turner, Carole King, Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland were mixed in with more current artists like Rhianna, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran and Sia bringing all walks of life together as well as a big dollop of musical theatre including Chess, Jekyll and Hyde and of course more than one song from Wicked.
The structure of the concert felt a little disjoined at times. Solos were performed randomly throughout the show when perhaps each lady having their own twenty minute solo section could have flowed better. There were some lovely moments like Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, where they poked fun at each other for the different roles they have played during their careers. Also, the segment where they reminisced over the songs they performed whilst at Laine Theatre Arts College together was lovely to watch. At one point two dancers came out on stage and performed during a song which was a little out of keeping with the rest of the show.
At over two and a half hours long this was everything a hard core fan could ask for. However, should Kerry and Louise decide to take their show further than this one nighter then I would suggesting cutting it back a little.
