Social Media Suicide is Clare McCall’s debut show, directed by Callie Nestleroth, in Edinburgh for a short run.

McCall is Izzy, or @izzybaby1991 to her online fans. It’s her 27th birthday and the audience is invited to celebrate with her; she’s even baked a cake. In the Wee Room at The Three Sisters there’s nowhere to hide from this interactive show. Party hats and party poppers are handed out, selfies are taken and hashtags are listed as Izzy live blogs her party and encourages the audience to follow her on Instagram, “I always follow back”.

What starts as a light hearted show fast becomes darkly comic as Izzy explains why she’s organised her party and invited us along. She explores social media addiction, the lengths she will go to for online fame and the legacy of the 27 Club. This show is well planned and hits close to home for those of us who find it hard to put down our phones. As the audience are an important part of the show, it’s slightly different every night as McCall works with the party goers in the room. Her engaging manner makes her fun to watch even in the darker moments.

This is definitely a show to take your social media addicted friends along to.
