Top Five Theatre Shows to see in the West End right now
People always ask me ‘what’s good right now to see in the West End’ and I always struggle to answer.
So, I’ve thought about it and these are my top 5 shows currently playing.
5. Into The Woods at Bridge Theatre
Sondheim and Lapine’s fairy-tale mash-up where Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Jack and a childless baker all get their wishes — and then have to live with the consequences.
I didn’t love this production but the new cast are amazing and so I would definitely recommend seeing it for them.
4. Teeth ‘N’ Smiles at Duke of York’s Theatre
David Hare’s 1975 play about a self-destructing rock band playing the 1969 Cambridge May Ball, weaponising sex, drugs and disillusion against the dying idealism of the ’60s.
I loved this. It brought me back to my teenage years watching local bands play gigs in tiny venues with beer-soaked floors.
3. Hadestown at Lyric Theatre
Anaïs Mitchell’s Tony-winning folk-jazz reimagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, set in a Depression-era underworld run by a tycoon called Hades.
I’ve seen this show many times but something about the latest cast just hits different – it’s so good!
2. The Book of Mormon at Prince of Wales Theatre
The South Park creators’ irreverent musical about two mismatched Mormon missionaries sent to a Ugandan village where their squeaky-clean script collides with warlords, disease and despair.
It may have been playing in London for thirteen years but with everything going on in the world right now, comedy and laughter like this is a real tonic!
1. Avenue Q at Shaftesbury Theatre
A foul-mouthed, puppet-led musical comedy about broke twentysomethings on a shabby New York street figuring out love, racism and what to do with an English Lit degree.
Back in the West End after more than fifteen years, this show is the best it has ever been. So many laughs, so many great songs, so many reasons to see it again and again.
