Sofia Escobar plays Christine Daaé in London’s Phantom of the Opera. Sofia recently took a few minutes out of her day to have Tea With Wilma…
How would you describe yourself in 5 words or less?
What a hard question! I’m not good at describing myself but I’d say I’m a down to earth girl who dreams big!
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
I like to get to the theatre early, put some music on while I have some ginger tea and do a bit of steaming. I then start makeup and warm up and here I go!
Can you tell us about the last time something went wrong on stage?
Here’s a funny one, one show, just before my solo singing ‘Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again’, Phantom dropped his skull stick from up in the cross. It fell right in front of me in complete silence and I had to sing the whole song wanting to laugh!
What’s your favourite song in this show?
My favourite song is the duet with Raoul, ‘All I Ask of You’.
Apart from the show you are in, what current show in London’s West End would you love to work on?
So many! I’d love to be in Les Mis, Ghost, Wicked… list goes on.
What West End show would you like to see make a comeback and why?
I’d love to see Miss Saigon back on the West End. It’s an old favourite of mine and I have never seen it live.
What was the last West End show you saw (apart from the one you are in) and what did you think of it?
I saw Sweeney Todd and absolutely loved it. Amazing performances from everyone involved.
What’s your favourite West End musical song of all time?
I’d have to say ‘Phantom of the Opera’. I’ve been facinated by it since I was a little girl.
Thank you for taking the time to have Tea with Wilma
