Charming! Edinburgh Fringe Review ★★★★

Disney Parody Musical Charming! – a must-see show at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Charming! is a Disney Parody Musical about a Prince who thinks it’s about time he got some recognition for his role in some of the stories.

Groanup Playhouse have brought four shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, all running in the same venue, one after the other every day. The same cast members pop up in different productions and there is something for everyone, from the baby-friendly ‘Milly’s Musical Adventure’ to ‘The Detective’s Demise’ and ‘Escape Room: The Musical’.

‘Charming! The Musical’ starts out as a one-man show and turns into something more as the story comes alive on stage.

Tom Rolph as the prince is glorious. He commands the room with oodles of ‘charm’ and a voice that soars. All he wants is to be loved and adored the way Disney Princesses are. After all, why does the prince always have to sit in the background?

When he discovers a genie in a lamp (played by Joe Sartin) he is suddenly allowed to make three wishes to make his dreams come true. But can wishes really solve all of our problems? Of course not and the prince finds this out the hard way.

This is a brilliantly funny hour of family comedy, well written (by its stars) and even featuring a few of your favourite princesses. If you love Disney, this is a must-see show. And even if you don’t, it is utterly charming and delightful to watch.

As with all good Disney stories, we are left with the much-needed message that we can change and become better versions of ourselves. Let’s all try to think about that as we gallop off home on our hobby horse.
