Musical theatre actor Joel Montague
Best known for his performances in Hamilton, Waitress, and Funny Girl.
A graduate of the Guildford School of Acting, Joel has become one of the most exciting and versatile performers in London’s West End, known for his charm, humour and powerhouse vocals.
Early Life and Training
Originally from the North West of England, Joel Montague discovered his love for performing at a young age.
After training at the prestigious Guildford School of Acting, he quickly made a name for himself in professional musical theatre with his combination of strong vocals, quick wit and engaging stage presence.
Breakthrough West End Roles
Joel’s early career included roles in Urinetown (2013) and Funny Girl, where his portrayal of Eddie Ryan earned him a WhatsOnStage Award nomination.
His breakout came as alternate Dewey Finn in School of Rock, a role that showcased his musical skill and comic energy. Joel was nominated for a West End Wilma Award in 2017 for Best Understudy but lost to Alice Fearn for her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked the Musical.
In 2019, Joel originated the role of Mendel in the UK premiere of Falsettos at The Other Palace. He later joined Waitress at the Adelphi Theatre as the lovable Ogie Herbert Eincorn, winning over audiences with his warmth and humour.
Hamilton and Beyond
Joel Montague went on to appear in the West End production of Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre, taking on the royal role of King George III. His hilarious and eccentric portrayal was praised by fans and critics alike, showing his ability to balance comedy with commanding stage presence.
Outside of Hamilton, Joel has toured the UK with Fat Friends – The Musical and appeared internationally in Guys & Dolls in Paris.
In 2025, Joel has taken on two exciting new roles: George Wilson in The Great Gatsby – The Musical and Buddy in Elf The Musical at the Aldwych Theatre.
