Magic at the Musicals returned to the Royal Albert Hall last weekend, to celebrate the best in musical theatre.
Hosted by Magic Radio presenter, actress and comedian Mel Giedroyc and Magic Musicals presenter and West End superstar Ruthie Henshall, the pair spent the evening laughing off fluffed lines, between performances from a wide range of West End and Touring musical theatre productions.
Shows like Hamilton, Matilda, Les Misérables, THE LION KING, Oliver!, The Phantom of the Opera, The Producers, The Bodyguard, Starlight Express, MJ The Musical, Back to the Future The Musical and Disney’s Hercules.
There was also a performance from new musical Starter for Ten, currently playing at Bristol Old Vic and starring Mel Giedroyc herself (although she was not part of this performance).
Ruthie Henshall, currently starring as Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret the Musical sang ‘So What’ from the show, followed by London’s newest Sally Bowles, Eva Noblezada singing ‘Maybe This Time’.
Mazz Murray, who finishes playing the role of Donna in MAMMA MIA! this week (after six years) gave an emotional performance of ‘The Winner Takes It All’, symbolising the end of an era. There are certainly some big platform boots to fill by her successor in this role.
Hot of the heels of the UK tour of Dear Evan Hansen, Alice Fearn returned to the role of Wicked’s Elphaba for the evening, giving two sensational performances of ‘The Wizard and I’ and ‘Defying Gravity’. If it were actually possible to ‘blow the roof off’ of a venue then this performance certainly would have done it.
Closing the show with a bang was Zoe Birkett with a sensational rendition of ‘Simply The Best’ from Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.
The event will see the award-winning London Musical Theatre Orchestra return to the stage alongside the performers.
Magic at the Musicals was a nice night out, demonstrating the incredible talents we have out there in the world of musical theatre. Some of the song choices were a little odd, mostly favouring solo performances from shows but it eventually revved up and got going. It was like a mini ‘West End Live‘ for people who wanted to pay in order to sit down and not stand in the middle of Trafalgar Square!
